xbox controller as a joystick or gamepad thing?

ok so i recently felt nostalgic and am playing mech warrior 4 for pc. the controls are kind of confusing.i want to use my Xbox360 Controller as a joystick thing. but the game wont register it as one. is there a way to do this? i saw some emulator thing which does the opposite of what i want, meaning it makes joystick controller into xbox games.

i dont know how to make it work on pcs. u’d have to take the controller apart and weld some wires together or something… i saw a guy do it on youtube with a SNES controller.
