Features of MSN MESSENGER
MSN messenger, now officially known as Windows Live Messenger is an instant messaging service, created by Microsoft. Windows Live Messenger has been a part of Microsoft’s set of online services since the year 2005. This instant messaging service is attracting more than 330 million users every month. So many people are attracted to use it because of some of its amazing features. Some of them are:
Sharing folders:
This feature is an absolutely perfect alternative to direct transfers of file. If a user wants to share a file with another person in their contact list, the sharing folder window will appear and they can share there files with each other instantly. This also means that the file is actually being shared between two computers and if the user deletes the shared file, it will also be deleted from the shared folder of the other user. This feature also comes with an anti virus program to minimize the risk of virus infected files being transferred.
PC-to-Phone calls:
This feature was initially available in selected countries through Verizon web calling which ended its services in Aug 2008 and replaced in the USA with Telefonica, whereas Orange gives the services to the rest of the countries in the world.
Interoperability:
This feature was announced by Yahoo and Microsoft in the yr. 2005 between their messengers and created the second largest instant messaging users base around the world. However, Interoperability was launched in 2006 and this allows users of yahoo and MSN messenger to talk to each other without creating an account on the other service.
Offline Messaging:
In this feature, the user can send messages to the other user even if he is offline and the offline user will receive all the messages once he comes online.
Games and Applications:
There are many applications and games that available in Windows Live Messenger and can be accessed through the conversation window just by clicking on the games icon. The users can also and challenge their friend or contact for a competition in a game, or invite them to start a shared external application.
“I’m” initiative:
The i’m initiative is a program that Microsoft launched in March 2007. It connects the user with ten different organizations which are dedicated to some or the other social causes through Windows Live Messenger, only for conversations that are being sent or received in the USA and Australia. Whenever someone has a conversation using i’m, Microsoft Corp. shares a part of the program’s advertising profits with the organization of the user’s choice. Currently, there is no end date for this program.
S60 Platform:
The S60 platform is used commonly in mobile phones and smart phones. His feature in itself has unique features like tabbed chat windows, integration with contact list etc.
Xbox Integration:
This feature is mainly known as Xbox live Messenger and also rarely known as the Windows Live Messenger 360. The user who is using windows Live Messenger can see the gamer tags of the other friends who are logged into Xbox live. Xbox 360 users can also chat in between the games but it supports only text chat and not the voice chat.
File Scanning:
The user of Windows Live Messenger can set up this messenger to use his Computer anti virus software to scan all the files that he receives through instant messaging and file sharing.
There are many more such unique features that make MSN messenger, which is now known as Windows Live Messenger, a much wanted, popular and a unique messenger to use.
