Why regular Nes Games were so difficult to overcome?

You know, old school Nintendo? Most of their games were hard as hell to beat. Examples of Battletoads, Zelda II, Mega Man games, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Turtles.

Well, for starters, some of them really sucked. weak control and led to the tough ones. However, these games had more to challenge the player who has impressed and surprised them all. I like to play Gears of War or Halo, but for fun. When playing Super Mario Brothers, I know what makes me frustration, I knew I had to beat him was how it works.
